Im looking at producing a film trailer with a genre of Drama. Below ive chosen 3 films which i believe to have a lot of drama and are based on the genre. Ive analysised a trailer for each film, looking at the 4 technical areas camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene, and the narrative and the representation.
Red riding hood is a film about a young girl Valerie, who is torn between her true love and an arranged marriage set up by her parents. At the same time the village they live in has been under seige by the dreaded werewolf. Now times are getting worse, the werewolf is taking human lives as its food source. Valerie's sister is one of the victims of the werewolf and after this attack the village makes its best effort to catch the beast, they call in the help of Solomon. This makes the werewolf unhappy and it attacks again, this time it gets in contact with Valerie, forcing her to make the choice to either go with it or to watch the village suffer.
The film is directed by Catherine Hardwicke, she is known for producing drama films with si-fi elements, her most know films are the Twilight saga. the Twilight films are also know for the amount of drama they contain.
close up |
Camerawork
The opening shot in the trailer is a close up of the moon when it goes red (bloodmoon). This indicates that the moon has a signifacant meaning in the film as the first shot in a trailer is usually a very important part of the plot.
hand held shot |
low angle |
The next few shots are hand held shots through a forest, leading up to a low angle shot showing the sun coming through the trees. The low angle shots normally represent vunerablity, so using one in the middle of the forest would suggest to the audience that there is something alone in the forest. It also suggets to the audience that someone is being chased or followed.
After this there is a wide shot of a guard at a gate, which shows a silhouette of something (the wolf) come across the front of the camera. This indicates that the guard is in danger as the silhouette hasnt been introduced to the audience, so it gives a tense atmosphere as it suggests the guard is most likely going to die. Using a wide shot shows the the guard is also alone which makes him vunerable to the silhouette (the wolf).
wide shot |
2 shot |
After this there is a 2 shot of what we can assume are 2 of the main characters (valerie and peter), we can assume this because they are the first characters we see close up and they are the first to have dialogue. 2 shots are a good way to compare characters too, so this shows the audience that there is a clear difference in the charcaters.
The next shot after this is a high angle shot showing a group of people surrounding a girl on the ground, this shows that the girl is most likely to be dead. Using a high angle shot for this it shows more about other characters in the film, it shows what the villagers are wearing and what the village is actually like, it also emphasises to the audience that people are vunerable, it shows that the wolf has control over them.
high angle |
A few seconds after this shot, the camera tilts down showing a 2 shot of valerie and peter together and being very close. This indicates to the audience that there is something between them as its twice now that they've been seen together.
Shortly after this shot the camera tilts again, this time showing a wide shot of a man (solomon) getting out of a carriage surrounded by guards. This indicates to the audience that this man is of great importance and should play a vital role in the film.
A little while after solomon has been inrtoduced, there is a series of mid shots showing a range of the characters in the film, this is happening while solomon is talking about who the wolf could be. Having a series of mid shots is good as it makes the audience think that is could be any one of the characters shown, but the audience has to make thier own mind up.
Later on in the trailer there is a fast zoom and slight tilt at solomon in a high building with spikes of wood covering the window. Having him in a high room overlooking the village shows the audience that he is a protector of the village, showing that he has a lot of power of the people and is in control.
mid shot |
Shortly after this we get the first glimpse of the wolf, its in mid shot and with a hand held camera. The mid shot is there just so that the audience get a slight look at the wolf but not too much, and the hand held is to show the audience that there is a sense of panic and fear whenever the wolf is around.
A while after this there is a scene between 2 of the main characters (valerie and henry), there is a wide shot of them, then then a close up of valeries hand, showing she has a knife. This indicates to the audience that she thinks Henry is dangerous, this then plays a part for the audience as they still dont know who the wolf is.
close up |
Straight after this there is a scene with valerie and peter in the forest, it has mid shots of both the characters to start with then goes to have an extreme close up of peters eyes. The extreme close up shows to the audience that eyes will play an important part in the film, it also keeps the audience wondering who the wolf is as lots of different things keep coming up.
extreme close up |
Shortly after there is a sequence of close ups of a few characters, it emphasises the eyes again, so the audience must know that eyes are significant and that they still dont know who the wolf is.
After this there is a series of long shots showing that the town is under attack by the wolf and that there is a lot of panic, this shows to the audience that this is when there is a lot of action and that its when important parts of the film will happen.
Soon after there is a high angle shot showing valerie chained up and surrounded by fire. The audience can see that she has been made vunerable as they should know that the wolf is coming for her. Straight after there is an extreme close up of her eyes through a mask. Again signifying to the audience about the importance of the eyes.

extreme close up |
Editing
The first bit of editing you see in the trailer is when you see the moon go red and turn into the blood moon, this editing is done in post production, turning the moon red shows thats there is going to be blood involved and thats means that there will be drama.
The next scene is when there is a hand held camera shot through the forest. The editing in this scene is that its been sped up, this gives the effect that something really fast is chasing someone, also being in the forest it shows that they are vunerable and in danger, so there will be drama involved.
dissolve |
Throughout the next few shots the editing is quite slow paced and the shots dissolve fade and wipe into the next ones. there isn't much editing to the shots its just the editing between shots that is effective, some of the shots have black screen between them for about 1 second, then the others just go from scene to scene. Having black inbetween the shots gives a pause between them, this makes the audience feel tense and not knowing what will happen. When the shots just cut from one to one the audience just feel like it flows more.
After a few seconds the pace starts getting faster and faster, this tells the audience that the climax of the trailer is going to happen soon and the most important events will be shown. Being fast pace gives the audience the sense of panic.
The rest of the trailer is just cutting from scene to scene with the occassional black shot. The editing slows down from the climax of the trailer but its still faster than that of the start of the trailer.
Throughout the trailer there it is contiunity and non contiunity editing, the contiunity editing is used to improve the flow of the trailer making it less obvious to the audience that there is any editing happening. Also at the same time there is a lot of non contiunity editing, for example the black shots used inbetween scenes, these make the audience feel tense and wondering whats going to happen.
Sound
The first bit of sound you hear in the trailer is a bit of non diegetic sound, its when the warner bros logo is coming onto the screen and zooms closer to you. The sound is like a dramatic boom, which makes the audience feel quite tense as its the first bit of sound they hear.
The next bit of sound you hear is a voiceover from solomon, the audience do not know whos voice it is though, he is saying 'until the bloodmoon ways...'
The next bit of sound is ambient sound when the camera is doing a hand held effect through the forest, the ambient sound is of leaves rustling, the sound has been amplified in post production to make the audience hear it clearly. The sound of leaves rustling with a sped up hand held camera shot shows the audience that someone/something is being chased, the fact that they cant see what it is makes it dramatic and tense.
The next bit is another bit of the voiceover from solomon saying 'you will never truely be safe' these words have an effect on the audience because its about being safe, so they will automantically know that someone/something is out there trying to get people.
The first bit of dialogue is when Valerie and Peter are in the forest, and Valerie says 'the wolf' this is an important part of the trailer as its the first voice of a character you see and it explains what the thing is in the forest and why the people arent safe. Shortly after Valerie speaks again saying 'it killed again' this time its in a voiceover. Saying that it killed again emphasises the fact that the wolf is what the people are afraid of.
Inbetween each shot/scene you get the dramatic boom, this keeps the audiences feeling tense throughout the trailer.
The next voice you hear is Peters, its in the form of a voiceover saying 'we're all in danger, run away with me' this tells the audience that there is something between Peter and Valerie.
Throughout the next few scenes there is dialogue for a few of the characters but also whilst there is dialogue there is also digetic sound, whilst Valerie is in the wood she can hear leaves rustling and something moving behind her. This makes the audiece uneasy as they know that someone is following her and it makes it tense and dramatic.
Still there is more voiceovers in the scenes, this tells the audience what is happening and clues to what will happen.
There is lots of digetic sounds throughout the trailer too, sounds such as doors shutting. This makes things more believable for the audience.
AS the trailer progresses there is incidental music added to parts where there is alot of action, for example when the wolf attacks the village, the incidental music tells the audience that something is about ti happen as it gets faster until the peak moment to which it then stops.
When the music stops you then hear the dialogue of the whole village screaming whilst they are running away from the wolf.
After this there is another bit of incidental music which comes up when some writing comes on the screen saying that its the same director as twilight. But this music stays on constantly for the rest of the trailer but gets quieter when there is a voice over or any dialogue, this keeps the audience on thier toes and shows that its the peak of the trailer as its fast and energetic music.
The voiceover and dialogue for the rest of the trailer explains more about the plot to the audience and keeps them wanting to make a choice about who the wolf is, so its dramatic as it could be anyone.
Mise-En-Scene
location |
The first bit of mise-en-scene we see is the location of the forest, being in a forest shows that the film will be quite dark and mysterious, this usually brings about a lot of drama. The location of the rest of the trailer is still within the forest and the village within the forest. This shows that the village is going to be small and vunerable.
props/ costume |
The next bit of mise-en-scene is when we see the first guard/solider at the village gates. This shows what type of clothing the villager will be wearing and it also tells us what era the film is set in. The guard is wearing a long robe with little body armour. This tells us that its set in a medevil time as now a days guards would wear a suits or army wear with some form of armour.
Also in this scene with the guard, we see some of the props that get used within the film. We see a cart made of wood, which we dont really see now a days so its shows us that its set in older times. Also the gate which the guard is near is made of wood poles, this shows its set in older times too as gates now a days are made of metal or wired fences.
costume/ makeup |
After this scene we get the first proper look at what the type of clothes the characters wear throughout the film. You cant see all of what Valerie, the main character, is wearing but you can see that its cream and seems quite simple. You can also see Peters, another of the main characters, wearing. He's wearing a simple black top. They are both wearing a type of necklace. Valerie isnt wearing much makeup either, this also shows that this is set in older times as most girls now a days wear makeup most of the time.
costume |
The next scene after this is a high angle shot of the village, this shows all the costumes of the villagers, the women are all wearing dresses of some sort. But they are all long and natural colours which shows they are older designs so again showing that its set in medevil times. The men are all dressed in plain trousers with a plain shirt and some have waist coats, they are all simple colours again and showing that its set in older times.
costume/ location |
A few scenes after there is shot of Peter and Valerie in forest, we get a better look at what they are both wearing. Peter is wearing all black with a red hankecheif. Valerie is wearing a long cream dress which is simple. She also has a plain belt around the waisted.
location/setting/ props |
The next scene is a shot of the village when Solomon arrives, there is a long shot just before he is shown, and it shows some more props used. There is horse and carriages and the houses are made of wood and thatched roofs, this is definately shows that its medevil times. Then you get the mid shot of solomon which shows that he is wearing a purple robe with a cross neckless, this signifies that he is religious and is going to be important as he is wearing bright colours.
makeup |
The next few shots are all shots showing close ups of people which shows the make up, none wears any make up, its all natural which shows its set in older times as people will wear make up now a days. the shots also show more costumes which are all plain and simple. also in the shots it shows you more parts of the village, which is all made of wood and thatched roofs.
costume |
prop |
Fire is used as a props towards the end of the trailer. Its used to show danger and fear of the village.

Camerawork
establishing shot |
close up |
The opening bit of camerawork in the trailer is an establishing shot of one of the characters in the film, Jacob, it shows the audience where they are, which is a railway track. It then goes into a close up of the jacobs feet whilst he is walking along the track. This shows the audience that this is going to be an important character as its focusing on him and he is the first person the audience sees.
After this it then goes to a mid shot of jacob, this shows you more about him as you can distinguish his age and what class he may be apart of.
The next few shots are master shots of what the audience can assume is a school as the voiceover is talking about an exam.
master shot |
mid shot |
The next shot you can see is a 2 shot of Jacob and a school teacher, this is a good comparison of the 2 characters as its compares age, class and emotion. this shot shows that jacob has got some bad news as his facial expression is that he is upset and sad. this tells the audience that show thing has happened.
There is then another master shot showing jacob in a hospital with his parents dead next to the doctor. This shows the audience what the news was in the previous scene, so its dramatic as his parents have died and jacob is now alone.
tracking shot |
2 shot |
The next few shots are mid and close ups of jacob, close ups show his facial emotions and how upset he is, the mid shots so his body language which is negative.
There is then a tracking shot of jacob running after a train, this shows the audience that he wants run get away from everything thats happened.
There is then a low angle shot which is also an over the shoulder shot of jacob behind the main man of the circus. this shows the jacob has been caught by one of the men and has brought him to the boss, being over the shoulder shows that the boss hasnt even turned to look at jacob to see what he has to say, showing that he doesnt have much respect for other people.
low angle/over the shoulder |
The next shot is a panning shot of jacob walking through lots of men doing manual labour, but its also how they have to put the circus up, this shows that there is a lots of work in store for jacob.
After this there is a wide shot of a lady, Marlena, on a horse, because she is shown high up the audience are lead to believe she is going to be another main character in the film.
The next few shots are over the shoulder shots of a group of people at a meal, and then jacob and the boss on the train top. Over the shoulder shots here show who the characters are looking at and its also gives the audience a good idea of the type of clothes the characters are wearing.
over the shoulder |
After this we get the first look at the circus performance, its show through a low angle shot to give the effect that they are high in the air and are in control.
wide shot |
There is then a few close up and 2 shots of jacob marlena and the boss at a meal, the close ups show emotions, it shows jacob and marlena looking at each other, and the 2 shots show that marlena is with the boss, they are actually married.
Shortly after there is a wide shot of the elephant, this shows that the elephant has quite an important role for the rest of the trailer.
The next few shots are close ups of Jacob, Marlena and the boss, this shows a contrast between the characters and shows emotions they are feeling. When jacob is with marlena he is happy and smiling, but when he is with the boss he doesnt seem very happy.
2 shot |
The next shot is a 2 shot of the boss with marlena, he has a hold of her face in a violent way, the 2 shot shows body language of both characters and it shows that there is tension between them.
high angle |
A few shots on there is a mid shot of jacob and marlena dancing, it shows that the 2 are falling for each other as they are close and looking into each others eyes.
After there is a mid shot and a high angle shot of the boss beating jacob with a pole/stick, this is after jacob is seen with marlena, the boss isnt happy so takes it out of jacob. the high angle shot shows that the boss is in control and has all the power of jacob.
A few seconds on there is a wide shot of marlena on the elephant going through a town, this shows the location and gives the audience a good idea what the clothing people wear and the time era they are in.
wide shot/ 2 shot |
After this there is then another high angle shot of 2 men holding jacob off the edge of the train, this again shows that jacob has no power and the 2 men are in control of him.
Shortly after they is then a wide/ 2 shot of jacob and the boss getting in a fight, this shows body language and compares the characters to each other, they are also in a crowd of people so it compares them to the people around them too. It also makes drama because they are fighting in a crowd.
close up |
there is then a tracking shot of jacob and marlena, this shows the running away, it gives the sense of panic and that they are in trouble so they have to run.
Then there is a close up of marlena taking jacobs hand, this shows the audience that marlena is leaving thr boss to be with jacob, the close up emphasising it.
panning shot |
There is then a number of close ups of the main characters faces, this shows the facial expressions they are showing. It compares what emotions they are going through.
Just as the trailer is ending there are panning shots of the circus as havok is taking place, the animals are losing control, and the panning shot shows the audience how much devistation is being caused.
Editing
The first bit of editing you see is continuity editing, when the camera cuts to a close up of jacobs feet then dissolve back to show his body. This is effective because the audience will know that he is an important character.
After this it then fades from jacob walking to 3 people walking towards a building and then fades again to when everyone is inside the building. Fades make the editing less boring for the audience, its non continuity editing.
Whilst inside the building when the teacher is talking there is a fast pace cut between him and jacob, this shows again to the audience that he will be important as he is being shown a lot.
The next few edits are face pace cuts of jacob and other characters, when he finds out about his parents death. Within this there is an eyeline match of jacob looking at them on the hospital bed. This shows the audience exactly what he's looking at.
The next few bits are slow pace editing, it shows the audience that there is sadness and low energy, as the incidental music speeds up th editing speeds up with it. When jacob gets on the train the pace gets faster. The audience then knows that something important is going to happen.
Throughout the most of the trailer the editing is only fades, dissolves and cuts, this is continuity editing and keeps the trailer running smoothly, and shows the audience who the important characters are.
As the trailer gets closer to the climax and the incidental music gets faster the pace of the editing increases, this tells the audience that its the climax and that there is more drama as it gives it energy and a sense of panic.
Sound
The first bit of sound the audience hears is digetic sound, its of Jacob walking along the railway line and is the sound of the stones he's treading on.
The next bit of sound is a voiceover, this is telling the audience about an exam, they can then assume that Jacob is a student of some kind so that gives them a rough idea of his age.
while the voiceover is happening there is some incidental music of a piano, its very relaxing music so the audience are quite calm at the minute as they dont know much about the plot yet.
The next bit of sound is dialogue from the school teachers, it tells the audience who jacob is, his last name, and its the first introduction of a character so it tells them that he is important.
After his name has been said there is more dialogue saying that there has beena car accident, this tells the audience about the plot and lets them know whats going on, throughout all of the scenes the incidental music is being played.
The dialogue in the next few seconds tells the audience a little more about jacob, it lets them know that he is alone and has no family left.
The next bit of sound you hear is digetic sound, its of the train horn, this lets the audience know that the train is going to play an important part in the film as its what jacob has run to to try and get away. At this point the incidental music changes a bit, it goes from a piano to a guitar and the pace of it increases, this tells the audience that the important parts of the trailer are coming up as the faster the music is the closer you are to teh climax of the trailer.
While this is happening there is more dialogue from Jacob, this tells the audience whats going on, he says that he's looking for work, so the audience now knows that te people in the room with Jacob are to do with work of some kind.
A few scenes on jacob asks about the women who is with the horses, to start with its a voice over but then when the other man talks its dialogue, this tells the audience who the lady is and that she is an important part in the film.
During the next scenes the incidental music is slowly getting faster, this tells the audience that the climax is getting near. While this is happening there are little bits of dialogue and voiceover that help the audience understand the plot.
Just after jacob says 'you're a beautiful woman, you deserve a beautiful life' this is when the incidental music really picks up, a drum is added in aswell which makes it more dramatic and tense for the audience.
Theres not much other sounds other than dialogue and voiceovers for the rest of the trailer, the dialogue and voice overs tells the audience whats going on, and whats going to happen.
Right before the end of the trailer, a choir of voices are added to the incidental music, this really empthasises the climax in the trailer and makes the audience tense.
location/setting |
Mise-En-Scene
The bit of mise-en-scene you see in the trailer is the location/ setting, we see jacob on the train tracks, this tells the audience that trains could play an important part in the film because its the first bit you see in the trailer.
The next part you see is the costume of jacob, you can see that he is wearing quite smart clothes and the audience can get an idea of what era the film is set. In the next shot you get another bit of location and you see some more costumes, this empthsises the era of the film. Then there is a master shot which shows props and costumes some more, the audience can tell that the shot is set in a classroom.
costumes/props |
Then there is a close up of jacob which shows make up, obviously as hes a male he doesnt wear any make up but it also gives the audience an idea of his age.
after this when jacob is in the hospital, it shows the audience what era its filmed in, because the hospital hasnt got high tech instruments or technologies.
prop of train |
A few scenes on jacob is chasing the train, the audience can see that the train is an important part because jacob needs to get away from everything thats happened. so the train is one of the most important props in the film.
Then when jacob has been found he gets taken to the boss, this scenes shows the audience more about the costumes and the props used in the trailer.
prop |
The next few scenes show a bit of the circus so this is props and setting. the circus is an important part so they show a lot of it.
After this we get our first look at a female character, we see her on a horse, so the horse is her prop. we also get to see her costume and her make up.
make up |
she is wearing very little make up, she's is shown to the audience to be quite natural. Shes wearing quite a simple outfit too, she's got a white shirt and trousers with a checkers waist coat.
In the next scenes we see her again, at the meal we see her with more make up on, she's wearing lipstick and mascara. This shows the audience that she can also be very glamourous. Shes also got her hair done up and she she has a fancy dress on, this tells the audience that she's is mostly at an important event as she's dressed up for it.
make up |
The next scene is jacob and the boss on top of the train, again the train is used as the prop, as the trailer keeps using it the audience should realise that its very important throughout the film.
costume |
After this we get our first proper look at what the circus is like, this shows a whole different type of costume, make up and props. the audience then can get a good comparison between people in their everyday like to when they are at work.
The next scene is is when Jacob, the boss and Marlena are at dinner, this gives us another look at what the characters wear and the make up used when its a fancy occassion. Marlena wears a nice dress and has her hair and make up done, where Jacob and the boss are in suits.
After this we get a wide shot of the elephant, the elephant is a prop, the audience know that its an important one because its given a lot of attention in the trailer, also the film is called water for elephants.
For the rest of the trailer it really only shows what the characters are wearing and where they are, the costumes dont really change that much and they dont show you many other locations, this tells the audience that its all roughly in the same place.

The social network trailer
Camerawork
The first bit of camerawork you see is Master shot of Harvard uni, with a few people in the fore ground. This tells the audience that the film is going to be either set in the uni or about a student or group of students who went there. The next shot you see is a 2 shot of two guys, this shows the audience that these are going to be important characters in the film as they are the first 2 people you see in the film.
The next shot is a close up of one of the guys hands typing on the keyboard and then onto the computer screen, this shows the audience that this guy has something to do with computers and/or the internet.
The first bit of editing you see in the trailer is fade in, it goes from a black screen to the shot of harvard uni, this tells the audience that the uni is going to be important because its the first thing the audience sees.
The next few bits of editing are just plain cuts between the the shots, this is continuity editing and keeps the trailer flowing for the audience.
For the first 25 seconds the editing is really fast paced editing, this tells the audience that the film is going to have a lot of energy and that there is going to be a lot happen. For the next 30 seconds the editing is much slower, this shows that the scenes are important as they are spending more time on them, it shows the audience that there are main events and the main characters in these parts.
within the slower editing there is a shot reverse shot between 2 of the main guy characters, this shows the audience that there is tension between them, the editing shows a comparison between the emotions and body language.
For the rest of the trailer, the editing gets faster and faster, this tells the audience that the climax of the trailer is going to happen.
All of the editing in the trailer is all just plain cuts there are no dissolves or fades in the whole trailer besides the opening shot.
All the editing is continuity editing, this makes the trailer flow for the audience, so they dont realise that the editing is happening.

he next few shots are wide shots and a panning shot of a group of people in a room, they are all smartly dressed, so this tells the audience that they must be something to do with the uni, so they must be students, after this there is a closer shot of one of the guys drinking.
It then goes to a wide shot of a group of people outside the front of uni, this shows they are most likely going to be more important to most of the other characters. The next few shots are mid shots of the 2 guys at the start at the trailer, but this time they are shown seperately, this empthasises to the audience that they are the main characters.
Then it has another close up of the guy on the computer, this again tells the audience that the guy has something to do with computers or the internet.
After this there is then lots of wide shots of people in small groups all with a computers, this again empthasises the fact that the film is going to be because everyone has computers.
A few shots after this there is a close up of an equation on a window in a dorm room, this shows that the people are quite smart and that its again to do with computers, as a group of people are sitting around a computer and they are all looking at the equations.
After this there is a wide shot of a girl who is talking to one of the main characters, this shows that she knows who he is, so whatever he was doing on the computers has become popular and has people knowing who they are.It then goes to a 2 shot of the girl and the guy in the toilet, this shows the audience a contrast between the make and female characters in the film.
After this there is then a low angle shot of a new character, he is shown with a low angle because it shows he has more power than the other characters, being a low angle also tells the audience that he is going to be important in the rest of the trailer. After he's been introduced theres then a wide shot of him and the other 2 main guys in the film with the girl. This tells the audience that there will be some kind of relationship between them, also because they are toasting there has most likely been a proposition made.
After this there is then a lot of mid shots of the main characters, this shows the audience how they are all different, it shows emotions and body language.
Half way through the trailer there is a panning shot around one of the main characters, this shows the audience that the next few shots are going to be focused on him because, the camera is spinning around him, this gives the impression that the world is spinning and his head.
There is then a couple of over the shoulder shots, with the 2 main male characters, this shows that they are looking at each other.
After this there is then high and low angles of the same characters showing that there is tense between them, the high angle is when one of them is looking down on the other, showing the audience that he has the power over the others.
There is then a wide shot of the 2, one of them is throwing a load of papers and books on the desk in front of the other, this shows the audience emotions and power.
After this there is then a establishing shot of a big city at night time, this tells the audience where the characters are and the timing there are there.

Editing
Sound
The first bit of sound you hear is a soundtrack which is for the film, the song is of kayne west - power, the song plays all the way through the film but is more quite when there is other sounds like dialogue and voiceovers, its then louder when there is no other sound and when certain lyrics fit in with the trailer.
The first bit of sound after the song is a voice over Mark, this tells the audience he is going to be the main character as he is the first person to talk, saying 'i think i've come up with something' This also tells the audience that the film is going to be about his idea because its the first bit of voice they hear.
The next bits of sound are a mixture of dialogue and voice overs, this tells the audience whats happening and what the film is going to be about. It tells the audience that its going to be about a social network called facebook and its for seeing what their friends are up to.
Just after when mark says 'im talking about taking the whole college experience and putting it all online' the song gets louder. The lyrics are 'im living in that 21st century' this reflects to the audience saying that technology has changed and its getting bigger and better.
The next few bits of sound are again dialogue and voice overs, this tells the audience more about facebook and its coming from all different characters so it tells the audience that its going to involve a lot of different things.
Shortly after this the song gets louder again, the lyrics are 'no one man should all that power' this tells the audience that facebook has become quite powerful and is getting bigger and bigger, this also tells the audience that because mark is the creator he has become very big and powerful.
The next bit of sound is a dialogue from Christy saying 'you made facebook' this tells the audience that facebook has become popular around places.
Shortly after there is more dialogue saying 'im sean parker' he created napster so this tells the audience that mark and facebook have become very powerful, enough to make sean parker interested in them.
Again there is more dialogue from sean saying that billion dollars is cooler than a million dollars, this again tells the audiece that facebook has become powerful because they are already making a million dollars but its capable of making a billion.
For the rest of the trailer the sounds are a mixture of voice overs and dialogue, this tells the audience whats happening and the audience can see/hear that there is tension between some of the characters.
As the trailer gets near the end the song gets faster and louder, this tells the audience that the climax is coming up and can tell that the trailer is coming towards the end.
Mise-en-scene
The first bit of mise-en-scene you see in the trailer is setting, the audience see that its set in a university, from this they can see that the characters are most likely going to be late teenagers early twenties.
After this is next bit of mise-en-scene you see is costume, you see the 2 main characters in their dorm room, you can see the the type of clothing they are wearing so you can see their fashion sense.
The next bit you see is some of the props, you see a computer, this tells the audience that the film is going to be about the internet or something on the computer because its the first bit of props you see.
The next shot after this there is a group of people/students in a hall, this shows more costumes and gives a good comparison between characters and shows the difference between male and females. The audience can see that the females have make up and dresses, but the males have suits on.
Also in this sense you see alcohol as a prop, this tells the audience that the characters are at that age and they because they are at uni that they are being rebellious.
In the next few shots you see some of the characters closer up so you can see their make up and costume, make up and costumes are good for showing who people are, what things they like and what groups of people are socialise with.
For the next few seconds all the scenes are of different people sitting around computers, this gives the audience a good comparison between characters and because they are all sitting round a computer as a prop, this tells the audience that the internet is an important part in the film.
For the next few scenes the audience is introduced to a new character, this character wears smart clothing and looks older than the rest of the cast, this tells the audience that he is going to be important and have quite a bit of power over the others. When the other characters are with the new one, they have props of more expensive things like cocktails and flashy clothes.
For the next lots of scenes, you see some of the characters close up again, you can see what they are wearing and their make up, you also get to see where they are, they are mainly in offices or houses, this tells the audience that they is a mix between work and play.
As the trailer comes to an end the mise-en-scene doesnt really change that much, the costumes are the same as what they've been for the most of the trailer, the props are also still the same as whats been used and the locations are still in the office and the house.
